In this post, we\u2019ll focus on the anatomy of the horse\u2019s head, particularly the areas where the bridle rests. This effort also affects the bridle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The headpiece varies from horse to horse \u2013 sometimes narrower, sometimes wider, sometimes longer, sometimes shorter. A suitable bridle provides good support in this regard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is a horse more refined and agile, or more clumsy and heavy-footed? Both factors influence the choice of bridle.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"padding-top:0;padding-right:0;padding-bottom:0;padding-left:0;flex-basis:25%\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Character traits<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some horses are extremely sensitive, whilst others are rather unresponsive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are horses that react negatively to certain types of pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What is your riding style like? Some particularly important factors to consider are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Lower jaw<\/span>: The lower jaw needs sufficient freedom of movement. This is the only way to achieve balance and relaxed muscles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Temporomandibular joint<\/span>: Tense tongue and masticatory muscles exert pressure on the temporomandibular joint. This can lead to stress and affect the neck muscles \u2013 with negative consequences for the rider\u2019s aids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Hyoid bone<\/span>: The hyoid bone is connected to the temporomandibular joint and, ultimately, to the skull via fascia and muscles. It influences the entire masticatory system and helps to activate the abdominal muscles as well as the hind legs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Nasal bone<\/span>: The nasal bone becomes thinner towards the tip and is therefore more sensitive. You should take a close look at these:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Genick: Every strap exerts pressure. It is important to pay close attention to how the pressure is distributed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bridge of the nose: The bridle rests directly on the bone; the lower it sits, the more sensitive it is.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cheekbone: This is where maximum pressure is exerted on the bone, again without any padding.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lower jaw: Bridles always run over the lower jawbone. And here, too, individual differences come into play: nerve pathways are never identical in all animals. To make matters more difficult, nerve pathways are not visible and therefore cannot be felt in the same way as bones. Areas particularly affected:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From just below the temporomandibular joint up to the nose: this is where the facial nerve, which controls facial expressions, begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lower jaw area towards the nose: this is where the trigeminal nerve runs, which is responsible for sensory perception and the facial muscles.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>The consequences of too much pressure on the nerves<\/strong><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: medium; font-weight: 400; white-space-collapse: collapse;\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Excessive pressure caused by an unsuitable bit affects the muscles throughout the horse\u2019s body and can have serious consequences:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tension in the back muscles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Headshaking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stress on muscle tone<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Impairment of the musculoskeletal system<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-style-default is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Many horse owners underestimate the impact of the bridle on the anatomy of the horse\u2019s head. The bridge of the nose, the lower jaw and the cheekbones, in particular, are sensitive areas that are easily subjected to pressure. Even anatomical bits, which are designed to relieve pressure on the nerve pathways, are not always the perfect solution. Often, these too run parallel to the nerve pathways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our tip: Draw on the horse\u2019s head with chalk:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>cheekbone<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bridge of the nose, including the tip<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Start of the nostril holes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nerve pathways<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This will give you a good idea of your own horse\u2019s conformation and where uncomfortable pressure might arise. You\u2019ll find that the position where a bridle sits is often fixed or cannot be adjusted at all.
